오늘의 사진에서 우리는 미국 알래스카 주에서 수시트나 강을 건너는 카리부로 알려진 순록을보고 있습니다. 알래스카에는 32 개의 뚜렷한 카리부 무리가 있습니다. 오늘날의 이미지에서 카리보는 Talkeetna, Chugach, Wrangell 및 Alaska 범위로 둘러싸인 높은 분지에서 약 50,000 평방 킬로미터를 가로 질러 돌아 다니는 Nelchina 무리의 구성원 일 가능성이 큽니다.
넬차이나 무리는 알래스카 카리보우에서 가장 많이 연구되고 인정받는 무리 중 하나인데, 그 이유는 그들의 범위가 국가의 주요 인간 인구 센터와 상대적으로 가깝기 때문입니다. 무리는 수백 년 동안 알래스카 인들에게 식량을 제공해 왔으며 인구는 신중하게 모니터링 된 사냥 규정을 통해 유지됩니다. 그러나 카리부 인구는 음식의 가용성과 날씨의 심각성에 따라 일년에서 다음 해로 변동 할 수 있습니다.

Caribou, Alaska
In today’s photo we’re looking at some reindeer, known as caribou here in the US state of Alaska, crossing the Susitna River. Alaska has 32 distinct caribou herds. It’s likely the caribou in today’s image are members of the Nelchina herd, which roams across about 50,000 square kilometres in the high basin surrounded by the Talkeetna, Chugach, Wrangell and Alaska ranges.
The Nelchina herd is among the most studied and recognised of Alaskan caribou partly because their range is relatively close to the major human population centres of the state. The herd has provided food for Alaskans for hundreds of years and its population is maintained through carefully monitored hunting regulations. But caribou populations can fluctuate from one year to the next depending on the availability of food and severity of the weather.
Around this time of year, from late September until early November, caribou males compete for the attention of females in hopes of furthering the species. Successful males will mate with 15-20 females a season. After the rutting season males will shed their antlers while females keep theirs until spring.
