잉글랜드 남서부 대서양 해안선에 있는 세인트 아이브스 베이(St Ives Bay)의 바위 사이에서 우리는 일출에 고드레비 등대를 엿볼 수 있습니다. 바다에서 약 5km 떨어진 곳에 위치한 폭풍우가 몰아치는 날씨에는 미터 두께의 벽이 대서양의 힘을 물리치고 스톤즈로 알려진 위험한 암초 옆에 위치한 이 작은 바위 섬을 강타합니다.

고드레비 등대는 요즘 자동화되어 있지만 1859년에 지어졌을 때 세 명의 등대지기가 이곳에서 순환 작업을 하고 있었고 두 명은 고드레비 섬의 오두막에 살고 있었습니다.  그 건설은 수세기에 걸친 난파선과 위험한 암초에서 많은 사망자를 따랐습니다. 1854년 11월 30일 증기선 나일강이 손실되어 모든 승객과 승무원이 사망하여 궁극적으로 등대가 건설되었습니다.

파수꾼은 철수했고 등대는 1930 년대에 자동으로 바뀌었고 1995 년에 태양 광 발전으로 전환되었습니다. 요즘 Godrevy Island의 유일한 주민은 바닷새와 봄에 나타나는 강건한 해안 야생화입니다.  1892년 10세의 어린 버지니아 울프(Virginia Woolfe)가 그랬던 것처럼 세인트 아이브스에서 등대 주변을 보트 여행할 수 있습니다. 그녀의 1927년 소설 등대에 영감을 주었다고 합니다 – 이야기는 영국의 반대편 끝에 있는 스카이의 섬을 배경으로 했습니다.

From between the rocks of St Ives Bay on south-west England’s Atlantic coastline we get a glimpse of Godrevy Lighthouse at sunrise.  Sitting roughly five kilometres out to sea, in stormy weather its metre-thick walls repel the force of the Atlantic as it batters this small rocky island, situated next to a dangerous reef known as the Stones.

Godrevy Lighthouse is automated these days, but when it was built in 1859 there were three lighthouse keepers working on rotation here, two living in the cottage on Godrevy Island. Its construction followed centuries of shipwrecks and many deaths on the treacherous reef. It was the loss of the steamer Nile on 30 November 1854, with all passengers and crew killed, that ultimately led to the lighthouse being built.

The keepers were withdrawn and the lighthouse went automatic in the 1930s, and was converted to solar power in 1995. These days, the only inhabitants of Godrevy Island are seabirds and the hardy coastal wildflowers that appear in the spring. You can take boat trips around the lighthouse from St Ives, as a young Virginia Woolfe did,  aged 10, in 1892. It is said to have inspired her 1927 novel To the Lighthouse – although the story was set on an island at the other end of the United Kingdom, on Skye.
